Fresh analysis reveals that patients who come off new weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide can put back on lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional lifestyle programs.
Published data in a major medical journal demonstrates that while obese individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Individuals buying these drugs should be aware of the risk of quick rebound weight gain when the medication concludes," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain means a return to starting weight within about 18 months.
Analyzing Treatments
The study, which looked at dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the results of these new drugs with other pills.
Researchers emphasize that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually see a more gradual creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
The Reason for the Rapid Regain
Nutrition scientists suggest the mode of action of the drugs is key to understanding the accelerated weight return.
GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could lessen sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement results in hunger is unsuppressed, making overeating a significant risk."
A Chronic Issue?
Health authorities advise the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians say that, considering the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy should be considered life-long.
This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "emphasize the chronic character of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.
Patient Experiences
Users who have come off the medication explain a sudden resurgence of appetite.
"It felt as if a trigger flipping and I was suddenly starving," described an individual.
This challenge is worsened if users have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Significant Interest
Recent estimates indicate that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest remaining high.
- Use is higher among women than males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Finally, experts stress that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent cure and long-term success likely depends on ongoing lifestyle support.
