Pat Cummins Set to Play a Significant Contribution in Ashes Series

Test match action

The Australian skipper has taken 309 wickets in 71 Test matches with an average of 22.10.

The Australian chief selector the selector has declared that captain Pat Cummins will be a central figure in the upcoming historic rivalry.

Speculation had been growing that Cummins might miss the series due to a ongoing back issue that remained unresolved.

Earlier indications from the Australian camp suggested no definitive call had been made regarding his involvement, with the extended contest scheduled to begin on 21 November in Western Australia.

He revealed that Cummins is "building up" and remained hopeful about his chances of being involved.

"It's clear that time is getting short and multiple considerations involved, aside from the physical problem, but additional elements," Bailey remarked.

"The outlook is good. [We are] really confident that he's going to play a significant role. With luck from the opening match. Otherwise, we'll reassess."

Injury History

He was sidelined the white-ball matches against India and New Zealand last month after scans revealed a stress reaction in his back.

He has a history of spinal problems, with flare-ups in multiple past seasons forcing him out of three Australian summers in four years.

Cummins stated he would be bold in recovery efforts in his rehabilitation process to make the squad for the Ashes.

Bailey noted that he did not know if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his rehabilitation but acknowledged it was "becoming urgent" for him to regain fitness for the first Test.

Contingency Plans

If he's unavailable, ex-skipper Smith will assume leadership.

All-rounder Cameron Green was excluded lately from the ODI lineup for their limited-overs matches against the Asian giants as a precautionary measure because of discomfort in his torso.

The selector characterized it as a "slight concern and confirmed that he's scheduled to appear in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "well-prepared to deliver overs."

"Considerable effort has gone into building out the plan for him to take part for the initial game as an batting and bowling option," the selector detailed.

"His involvement was limited to the first two ODIs regardless. How he handles the willow in shorter formats, should it hinder progress for another day, the choice was made to adopt a safer strategy."
