The Legendary Anime Ends a Quarter-Century Era in 2026

It's the end of an iconic period for ongoing anime, with Toei Animation announcing a revised release plan for One Piece, which has run continuously for more than 25 years and included numerous non-canon storylines. Starting in January, once the current storyline wraps up, the anime will take a quarterly break until April, when the next major arc kicks off.

Updated Production Plan

Going forward, the series will produce two seasons every annually for a maximum of two dozen installments. The studio explains this will help the anime to “dive even deeper into the core of the ONE PIECE world — incorporating more material, rhythm, and pacing of the source material.” However, producers end by promising “exciting surprises” during the series' break, which suggests more One Piece content, such as the upcoming live-action adaptation, scheduled to debut in the interim.

Previous Hiatus Benefits

The One Piece anime previously took a six-month break that started in October 2024 and concluded in early 2025. The hiatus was for the animators to enhance the animation quality and let the comic to build a lead to prevent a rushed adaptation and repetitive summaries. The anime couldn't benefit more from this break, and it has been able to deliver viewers with countless fight scenes, high-quality animation, and less filler than previously.

Adopting Modern Trends

While some recap episodes appeared during the recent run, the benefits of this updated approach greatly outweigh the occasional interruption in the story. This also gives the manga, which is presently in the middle of the latest arc, to gain more ground on the anime. According to the news, this may lead to a single installment of the series adapting one chapter, with some instead handling one and a half chapters or additional to compensate for time.

It's the end of a generation for anime, as the epic saga is the last big series to abandon the old-school way of production, which focused on being on air for most of the calendar. This explains why iconic series such as Bleach, and naturally One Piece have numerous filler arcs, and the standard of the art can vary widely between one episode and the next. Nowadays, anime production is structured in cours, with one or two at most releasing each annually, allowing for better quality and more faithfulness to the original work.
